Data Protection Day

The Council of Europe established the Data Protection Day on 28 January – it will be celebrated throughout Europe each year on that date which is the anniversary of opening for signature the Convention no. 108 of the Council of Europe of 28 January 1981 (for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data).

The main objective of the Data Protection Day is to emphasise the importance of proper protection of data – as data processing is constantly present in all citizens’ lives. In addition, the intention of the Council of Europe was to raise the data protection awareness, as well as to inform them about their rights and good practices, which should facilitate the enforcement of these rights.

In Poland, the first such day was celebrated on 28 January 2007. During the Second Data Protection Day in Warsaw, GIODO and Direct Marketing Association (Stowarzyszenie Marketingu Bezpośredniego) entered into the agreement on cooperation in the improvement of personal data protection level and ensuring the right to privacy to Polish citizens.
